Why Locals Love SGPC Bu Wiryo 1959

Nestled in the heart of Yogyakarta’s Sleman Regency, SGPC Bu Wiryo 1959 is an authentic Indonesian restaurant that stands as a beacon for traditional Javanese flavors, with a special spotlight on the iconic Sego Pecel. Located conveniently on Jl. Agro No.10, this humble yet beloved eatery invites diners to experience a culinary journey rooted deeply in regional heritage and comfort.

At SGPC Bu Wiryo 1959, the star dish is undeniably the Sego Pecel—a vibrant rice dish generously adorned with a medley of freshly boiled vegetables, all expertly coated in a perfectly balanced peanut sauce. Unlike many versions where the sauce can overwhelm, here it complements the natural sweetness and freshness of the vegies, creating a harmonious dance of flavors that lingers memorably on the palate. The peanut dressing is richly textured yet light, making the whole dish feel comforting without ever being heavy.

Pairing the Sego Pecel with a sunny side egg adds a luscious creaminess that elevates every bite, while sides like fried chicken and traditional Javanese crackers add satisfying crispy and savory layers. Each ingredient feels thoughtfully prepared and genuinely fresh, showcasing the care and culinary skill behind this decades-old establishment.

The atmosphere at SGPC Bu Wiryo 1959 is refreshingly unpretentious and inviting—a true reflection of its legacy since 1959. The setting feels intimate and grounded, perfect for anyone seeking a genuine taste of Jogja’s local food culture. Patrons have shared that the place sometimes hosts traditional performances, adding an enriching cultural layer to the dining experience that makes a visit here even more special.

Beyond just the flavors, what truly resonates with guests is the feeling of nostalgia and warmth that SGPC Bu Wiryo offers. One diner reminisced about their student days in Yogyakarta 30 years ago, calling it “THE BEST SEGO PECEL IN THE WORLD,” emphasizing the deep emotional connection that the food here can inspire. Another highlighted the affordability and generous portions, truly making this a great value spot where quality and heart meet.

Whether you’re an adventurous food lover wanting to dive deeply into authentic Indonesian cuisine, or someone simply seeking a satisfying, wholesome meal, SGPC Bu Wiryo 1959 delivers on all fronts. It’s a must-visit destination in Jogja where every bite tells a story—and one you’ll be eager to return to.

Tempat nasi pecel yang enak. If you happen to be in Jogja and want to try authentic Indonesian food, then you have to try this place. Very delicious and somehow healthy (I think so, haha). Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to try the soup, but the Nasi Pecel is fantastic. Will be back here for sure.

Perhaps, in all my years of eating Pecel, they serve the best Pecel thus far. Often enough, the peanut sauce could be somewhat overwhelming in other places - but not here. The peanut sauce complement the natural sweetness from boiled vegies in the most balance way possible for me. The only regret that I have was to share it with a friend. Should have ordered one plate all to myself. Another menu that I’d like to recommend would be the clear beef soup. It has chunks of potato and carrot, accompanied with vermicelli and topped with fried shallot, chopped celery and spring onion. Overall it was tender and comforting.

Humble place but the food is a chef’s kiss! it is very simple dish, tasty and cheap. Sometimes they have traditional performance as well.

I’m obviously biased here. As this is a very memorable place for me, as it recall my time study in Jogja 30 years ago. But believe me when I say this is THE BEST SEGO PECEL IN THE WORLD. It’s a must-go for breakfast in Jogja. You should try “Sego Pecel” (rice dish with vegetable salad in peanut dressing) with Sunny Side Egg. Add it with fried chicken and javanese crackers. It’s a perfect dish to start your day. If you’re not fancy for the Sego Pecel, you can try the clear soup with beef or chicken. It’s also popular as it tastes great. Try to come when they have their in-house traditional band performing, it’s definitely a unique culinary experience in Jogja.

The food is delicious, with flavors that lean slightly toward the sweet side, which makes it very enjoyable and easy to like. Everything is well seasoned and comforting. What really stands out is the pricing — very affordable for Jakarta standards, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. Overall, it offers great value for money and satisfying flavors. Definitely a place worth visiting again.

Always a must visit while in town, been bringing tourists to this place as well (my whole office colleagues ) and it didn't disappoint! Consistent flavors since my first visit as a kid 25 years ago it's amazing how they keep delivering the best quality dishes here. Tip from a local: try the fresh tomato juice!

It's a legend. This place keep our last memory when I was studying at UGM. The food is moderate but very nice. The atmosphere is simple, sometimes they provide a 'sinden' who sing a Javanese song complete with 'gamelan' playing..

If you are a member of the academic UGM, you know this place, a very famous place to eat pecel and beef soup. Actually the taste is good but don't expect too much. What you buy here is the memories too, not just the food and drink.
